20 FREE Alphabet Printables for Preschoolers (2023)

Alphabet printables for preschoolers are a FUN way to learn about the letters of the alphabet!

What sets my printables apart from others is that I make them hands-on, so it’s not just paper-pencil.

Your kids will be using other supplies than just a pencil to complete the worksheets. These sheets encourage hands-on learning and play-based learning strategies!

Activity #1: Baking Sheet Alphabet Activity

Baking sheets are the perfect way to practice the alphabet! The best part about this is that I have a bunch of FREE alphabet printables for preschoolers in this section!

C. Activity

Have your child identify each letter on the printable. Then, they should place the matching letter on top of it!

You can also use upper case magnets to make this an upper to lower case matching activity.

This is a great phonics activity to start prepping your child for reading!

Activity #2: Do-A-Dot Letter Building

Who doesn’t love mess-free art?! Do-A-Dot paint markers pretty mess-free as long as your little one doesn’t wipe them all over their hand, wishful thinking, right?!

This printable is a perfect way to let you know if your little one can differentiate letters!

B. Set-up

Print off the pages and get the paint markers ready!

C. Activity

Your little ones will use the paint markers to place a dot on only the letter D. See if they can find all the letter D’s independently. To extend the learning, have them count how many letter D’s they found on the sheets.

Activity #3: E for Egg Rescue

Kids love playing with plastic eggs! They love opening them up to find a surprise inside, right?

Bring this fun activity into learning by creating a sensory bin with plastic eggs! This activity focuses on upper and lower case letter sorting!

How to do this activity

A. Materials you need

B. Set-up

In a sensory bin, add some Easter grass! Print off my FREE Letter E egg cards and mats. Fill the plastic eggs with the upper and lower case letter E cards.

This last part is optional, but you can add some painter’s tape around the sensory bin to make it an egg rescue to challenge older kids.

C. Activity

Have your little ones rescue the eggs or just opening the eggs to find an upper or lower-case letter card. They will place the upper or lower case card on the matching letter mat (as you see above).

Activity #4: Alphabet Sand Matching Bin

Alphabet matching is a great way to review the letters of the alphabet with preschoolers!

It’s a way to check for understanding that kids can differentiate between the letters. This is a FUN and engaging way to get them excited to learn.

B. Set-up

Dump the sand into a sensory bin! Add in the letters and sand toys.

Print off my letter matching sheet! Both upper and lower case letters are available.

C. Activity

Your little ones can play with the sand and dig for letters with the shovel.

When they find a letter, they should identify it and then match it up to the letter on the printable.

Try to have them find all the letters of the alphabet!

Activity#5: Alphabet Flower Garden

Looking for a fun and spring-themed alphabet activity? This is a wonderful way to practice alphabetical order with preschoolers!

Plus, it’s a recycle and play activity, which is one of my favorites to put together.

How to do this activity

A. Materials you need

B. Set-up

Cut off the middle of pieces of the egg carton. Flip it over and make slices at the bottom of each egg holder. Then, paint the entire container green.

Hot glue the letter printables to a green popsicle stick!

C. Activity

The kids will place the alphabet flower sticks into the egg carton in alphabetical order! Practice letter recognition skills and fine motor skills with this activity.

Activity #6: Beginning Sound Clips

Preschoolers need to work on those fine motor skills! This is the perfect alphabet printable for that.

I love this activity because it’s bright, colorful and the kids get excited to see what pictures are on each board.

How to do this activity

A. Materials you need

  • cardboard (optional)
  • tape (optional)
  • cardstock paper

B. Set-up

Print off the letters you want to work on. You can cut out the paper and tape them to a piece of cardboard if you want to! This helps the clips stay in place a bit better.

C. Activity

The kids will identify each picture around the letter. They will make the beginning sound of each image.

When they find a picture with the sound of the letter in the middle, they will open a clothespin and place it on the picture!

This is a great first step to reading!


Activity #7: Alphabet Magnetic Sensory Bin

Have you ever used magnetic wands? They are a blast for the preschoolers! It’s so fun to pick up magnetic objects! It’s a great experiment to go around to see what is magnetic and what is not!

This specific bin doesn’t just focus on the letter M. It works on ALL the alphabet letters. But, since magnetic starts with M, this is perfect.

How to do this activity

B. Set-up

For a filler for this bin, I used rainbow rice. Below are directions on how to make this!

Place magnetic letters inside the rice upside down so the kids can pick it up with the wand.


*How to create rainbow rice*

a.  Dump 1 cup of rice into a ziplock bag.

b. Add in a few drops of food coloring or liquid watercolors.

c. Close the bag and shake it up until it’s covering all the rice

d. On a baking sheet, place parchment paper down and dump the rice onto the paper to dry. Make sure to spread it out to dry quicker.

e. Repeat this process for all the colors you want to do!


C. Activity

The kids will use magnetic wands to pick up the letters. Once they get one, they will identify the letter and then match it to the letter on the worksheet!

Review each letter of the alphabet this way!

Activity #8: Secret Words

This is my favorite alphabet printable on this list! I love the mystery part of this activity.

Secret words are a great way to challenge older children who are starting to get ready to read!

B. Set-up

Print out the rectangles of images and cut them out. Tape them to the baking sheet.

C. Activity

Your kids will identify the first picture and make the beginning sound. They will place the correct letter underneath it. The kids will repeat this process until they make the word.

They can either read the word or sound out the word’s letters together, then read each word!

Activity #9: Beach Cut and Paste

Take me to the beach!! Please! This alphabet printable for preschoolers is not just perfect for the summertime, but anytime throughout the year!

I love scissor skills activities like this and so do the kids! It’s such great practice for them for kindergarten.

C. Activity

Have the kids cut out the letters at the bottom of the sheet. They will say each letter; they paste the correct lower case letter next to the upper case letter.

Place an art tray underneath the worksheets, so the glue gets on the tray! Art trays are such lifesavers.


Activity #10: Popsicle Learning Pack

C. Activity

Have the kids complete as many of the printables as you want at that time.

One tip I can give you is is to only put 1-2 printable activities out at a time. I am VERY into play-based learning strategies. These printables are here to help teach and check for understanding.

However, they should not be the only activity that is done to teach your little one.

You can always have the sheets ready to complete another day!

Activity #11: Beginning Sound Plate Puzzles

Paper plate activities are easy to put together! This FREE alphabet beginning sound printable is perfect for preschoolers and kindergarteners.

Puzzles are one of my favorite ways to teach my kids. They are hands-on, and the kids enjoy them!

How to do this activity

A. Materials you need

  • paper plates
  • FREE Alphabet Beginning Sound printable
  • tape

B. Set-up

Cut paper plates in half. You can make the lines straight, zig-zags, or curvey.

Cut out the images and tape them on one side of the plate. Then, write the letter it starts with on the other side.

C. Activity

Separate the letters from the pictures. Give your child three pictures and also give them three choices of letters to match.

See if they can put the correct pictures with the letter!

They should say the name of the picture and make the sound of the beginning letter it starts with. Then, identify which letter matches up with it and place it together!


Activity #12: Letter Tracing Cards

Looking for a fun way to work on handwriting skills? You can use my free alphabet tracibles!

Either use them with just a pencil, or you can create a writing tray set-up.

How to do this activity

A. Materials you need

Lower Case Letter Tracible Cards

B. Set-up

Print off what letters you would like to have your little ones practice writing.

If you are setting up a writing tray, dump the sprinkles in the tray and place the letter tracible in the front!

C. Activity

These tracibles have numbers on them to show your child what order they should draw their lines in.

Have them use a pencil to create each letter by following the numbered steps!

If you are using a writing tray, have them attempt to make the letter using their finger or a paintbrush, using the same method of numbered order as they see on the printable!

Writing the letters correctly is important. Following the correct numbered steps is crucial to forming good handwriting habits.

Activity #13: Halloween Search and Match

This Halloween activity was a blast! I found these pumpkin candy holders at Target, so be on the lookout for these during the season!

How to do this activity

A. Materials you need

B. Set-up

Place letters inside the Halloween candy holders. Hide them around your home or classroom!

Print off the sheet and place it on a table for them to go back to.

C. Activity

Your children will search to find those pumpkin holders! Once they find one, they will open it up and see what letter is inside.

They will say the letter and head back to the Halloween mat to match it up on the sheet.

The kids will continue playing until they find all the containers!

C. Activity

Say an alphabet letter and have your child place one of the supplies on it. Repeat this for every letter!

Letters A-Z are available as well as numbers 1-20!

Activity #15: Beginning Sound Cups

Do you go through a ton of paper cups? We do! The kids use small paper cups when we brush our teeth to rinse, and I used to just toss them.

It got me thinking, how can these can be used for learning? I have the PERFECT way to reuse these cups! Use them for a beginning sounds activity!

B. Set-up

On paper cups, write the letters of the alphabet with a marker.

C. Activity

Print off the worksheets! Have your kids identify each picture on the page.

They should make the beginning sound of each picture. Then, they will pick up the cup with the correct letter on it and place it on top of the picture.

Repeat this for each letter of the alphabet!


Activity #16: Snowy Letter Match

I am a HUGE fan of bringing learning into sensory play. Your preschooler will love it too!

In this sensory bin, I made some fake snow and placed in some of our favorite letters!

2. Set-up

Create fake snow by dumping in a little powder and adding some water! Then, add in the letters. Lastly, print off my worksheet and place it into a dry erase folder!

3. Activity

Have your little ones use kid-friendly tweezers to pick out the letters and match them up on my worksheet! Talk about what each letter is with your child.

Activity #17: Ear Muff Craft

It’s so important for kids to recognize both upper and lower case letters before kindergarten! This is a great way to practice these skills in a FUN way.

Have the kids match up the correct upper and lower case letters! They should say the letter they are working on! Cut the pipe cleaner a little and bend it. The kids should glue it to the back of the letters!

Activity #18: Letter I SPY

I SPY activities have become a staple for us! The kids enjoy searching for the objects and seeing if they can find all of them before the other one can.

This is a wonderful and fun way to get some counting practice in as well!

Print off the I SPY sheet and grab crayons!

C. Activity

In the key at the bottom of the page, next to each letter, there is a number. That is how many of each letter that there are on the page.

When your little one searches through the letters and finds the one they are looking for, they should color it in!

Use different colors to indicate the different letters! Check them off at the bottom when they are done with each letter.

Color-coding activities are great for kids to show comprehension skills!

Checking for understanding is crucial to the learning process. We have to make sure that kids understand the skills you are teaching them before moving on to other concepts.

This printable can be used in two different ways.

  • You can have the kids find and color the letter on the sheet
  • They can color in all the other letters but that letter!

See if they can tell what letter they created when they are finished coloring!

Activity #20: Night Sensory Bag

This night-themed sensory bag and printable is a FUN way for kids to practice the letters of the alphabet.

It is a mess-free and exciting activity for kids to search for the letters!

How to do this activity

A. Materials you need

  • plastic bag
  • rubbing alcohol + cotton ball ( to remove label)
  • hair gel
  • water
  • black food coloring
  • star glitter
  • FREE printable

B. Set-up

Remove the label to the bag by putting a little rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball to wipe it off!

Add a bottle of hair gel and 1/2 a cup of water to the bag. Drop in a few drops of black food coloring and some star glitter!

Print off my nighttime alphabet printable and tape it down to a flat surface.

C. Activity

Place the sensory bag on my printable and have the kids start to search! They should shout out the letter they find when they come across it.

The goal is to try to find ALL the letters of the alphabet!

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

Alphabet printables for preschoolers are an excellent way to learn the letters of the alphabet! It’s also a great way for you to check for understanding that they can differentiate the letters of the alphabet.
