Optional Supplies

These are the supplies you need to make the faces for the Halloween lava lamps!

Step-By-Step Directions

#1: Create your jars using a black dry erase marker! Don’t worry, these come off if you want to use the jars again.

#2: For the ghost and pumpkin, use a marker to create the faces! To make the Frankenstein, make his hair with the dry erase marker, hot glue eyes onto the jar and make his other features with the marker. Lastly, to make the black cat, create ears for the cat out of cardstock paper and hot glue them on. Then, hot glue a pink pom for the nose and add your googly eyes. Lastly, draw on the whiskers.

All the hot glue can peel off the glass jar!

#3: Fill your glass jar 1/2 full with baby oil. Then, add about 1/3 cup of water to the baby oil.

#4: In bowls, mix the colors you want to create. We did black for the cat, orange for the pumpkin, green for Frankenstein, and white for the ghost. To create the mix, add a few drops of acrylic paint into a bowl and a 1/3 cup of water. Mix with a spoon and add that mix into the baby oil.

#5: Break up Alka Seltzter tablet and add it into your jars. Watch the lava start to happen!

#6: You can add more Alka Seltzer in as well to keep the reaction going again and again. It lasts for a few minutes each time.
