Halloween Paper Lanterns

These Halloween paper lanterns are fun to make with the kids and they make a great Halloween decoration for trick or treat!

I love adding the little tea light inside the lanterns so they light up. The kids can carry these around with them too!

Let’s get started with how to make these Halloween paper lanterns.

Supplies you need

Here are the supplies you need to make these adorable Halloween paper lanterns

Step by Step Directions

Here are the step by step directions on how to make Halloween paper lanterns.

#1: Fold your cardstock paper in half hot dog style (long ways).

#2: Cut slits from the fold close to the edge but not all the way! I would use a ruler to draw a light line to show the kids where to cut. You’ll want to make about 12 lines.

#3: Unfold the paper and either tape or hot glue the sides together so they can form a lantern shape! Once you make your cuts, this is how it should look.

#4: Cut a small strip of paper to create the handle for lantern and hot glue the ends on the inside of the lantern. You can also use a glue stick, but to ensure it will stay, use hot glue.

#5: Create your faces for your lantern! If creating a pumpkin, you’ll need triangle eyes, nose, and a fun mouth shape! When creating the ghost you’ll just need 3 ovals to create the spooky face.

Lastly, if creating the bat, you’ll draw 2 triangles for the bats ears, wings, and glue on googly eyes! Add a smile for the bat with a chalk marker and create two triangle teeth out of white paper.

#6: Hot glue a tea light on the inside of the lantern at the bottom. Hot glue the side of the tea light so it’s easy for the kids to be able to switch the tea light on and off.

Now it’s time to enjoy your fun lanterns you made!!
